Our Mandate
The Research, Development and Innovation Department drives the National Biotechnology Authority's scientific agenda through cutting-edge research, strategic partnerships, and the development of innovative biotechnology solutions across multiple sectors.
- Conducting research in agricultural, medical, biopharmaceutical, environmental and animal biotechnology
- Establishing the National Biosafety Reference Laboratory
- Development and registration of products with relevant authorities

Meet Our Leadership
The Research, Development and Innovation Department is led by a distinguished scientist with over 20 years of experience.
Dr Shepherd Manhokwe is a Research, Development and Innovation Manager at National Biotechnology Authority of Zimbabwe. He holds a BSc Biochemistry (Honours) and MSc Biotechnology from University of Zimbabwe. He completed a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition at Midlands State University. Dr Manhokwe is a holder of 3 certificates from Wageningen Centre for Development Innovation (WCDI), Netherlands and a certificate in Nanotechnology for Water and Wastewater Treatment from UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education, Delft, Netherlands. He has several research publications in peer reviewed journals and 4 book chapters, and over 20 years of Higher and Tertiary education experience. Dr. Manhokwe is a Nuffic-Orange Knowledge Programme (OKP) Fellow and a graduate of the Future Africa's Zimbabwe Science Leadership Program.

Strengthening local production of biologics and vaccines to reduce import dependency and enhance health security.
🏭 Industrial Biotechnology
Development of novel food products. Positioning NBA as a hub for fermentation products and Probiotics.
💊 Drug Discovery
Accelerating the development of novel drugs for communicable diseases and cancers.
🔬 Advanced Diagnostics Development
Developing affordable, rapid, and accurate diagnostic tools for infectious diseases.
🌾 Agricultural Biotechnology
Development of Biofertilizers and provision of disease-free Irish potato seed. Domestication of indigenous fruit trees through seed system development.
