Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
An international treaty under the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Protocol seeks to ensure the safe handling, transport and use of Living Modified Organisms (LMOs) that may have adverse effects on biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health.
As the designated National Focal Point and National Competent Authority, the NBA is responsible for implementing the Protocol in Zimbabwe. Information on Zimbabwe's implementation is posted on the Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH) — a global online platform for sharing information on LMOs.
Through the BCH, the NBA ensures that Zimbabwe's biosafety laws, regulatory decisions, and risk assessments are accessible to the public and the international community — underscoring the NBA's commitment to responsible biotechnology innovation while safeguarding Zimbabwe's rich biodiversity.
