Biotechnology is a powerful tool which can be harnessed in environment management to clean air, waste, water and populated soil. Environmental biotechnology employs biological systems, parts of systems or derivates to maintain/improve the environment.
POTENTIAL APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY IN ZIMBABWE
Waste water purification using organisms and/or their derivatives.
Bioremediation – the use of naturally occurring or deliberately introduced microorganisms to consume and breakdown environmental pollutants, for example cleaning mine dumps and oil spills.
Biomimicry – production of equipment and structures through imitation of naturally occurring systems.
Production of bio-herbicides which are biodegradable and hence eliminating reducing residue carry over problems.
Treatment of alien invasive species, for example bioherbicide against water hyacinth in the Lake Chivero
CONCERNS ADDRESSED BY THE NATIONAL BIO-SAFETY FRAMEWORK
Effects on the non-target organisms.
Weediness due to gene flow.
GMOs may worsen an existing pest due to development of resistance.
